Georgetown always had beautiful places, whether you were a quiet solitary person or someone who preferred the bustle of life. Just as important, such places were free or at prices that the ordinary person could afford. We appreciate them even more when we leave the country and have to strain our memories to recall these sights and sounds.

Many other places in Guyana are also beautiful. A few years ago I was taken on a tour of the Linden and surroundng countryside by a very knowledgeable guide from the town's museum. Amerindians swam in red water pools, and we were enticed into the blue waters of a lake at the bottom on a sandy hill. Beautiful, wonderful Guyana.

Despite its past, these gardens are an island of peace in a raucous city.
